Ceramic Hip Replacement

Ceramic total hip components have been used for many years, but have undergone fundamental changes to improve durability and fixation.

Subsequent generations have a decreased grain size, increased density, composite materials, and a pressing process that has increased the durability and improved the wear characteristics.Current published survivorship rates of these ceramic components are 95%-100% at 8-10 years.

The Biolox delta ceramic head (DePuySynthes, Warsaw, IN) is promoted as ceramic head with improved wear properties and increased stability. It is a Zirconia-toughened, platelet-reinforced alumina ceramic. Benefits of the alumina material include a high hardness, improved biocompatibility, and hydrothermal stability. Benefits of the Zirconia and strontium oxide added to the alumina matrix include an increase in fracture toughness.

The Duraloc Option Ceramic Acetabular system (DePuySynthes, Warsaw, IN) is promoted as a system that provides excellent wear characteristics, along with proven fixation technology. The alumina ceramic components have improved wear resistance, high hardness, and high component reliability. These are combined with the Porocoat porous coating composed of biocompatible titanium beads.

Oxinium Hip Replacement

OXINIUM - is oxidized zirconium is a revolutionary new material that is harder and 4900 times more resistant to scratching than the common implant material cobalt chrome . The oxinium alloy is also smoother than other metals , so there is less friction and wear , which means you implant may last significantly longer . And if metal allergy is a concern , these components are made from one of the most biocompatable materials .
